Winter road safety and gritting services in Lightmoor Village

Posted on: 21 Nov 25

As winter approaches, our contractor is ready to provide snowploughing and gritting services whenever they are needed. Residents contribute to this service as part of the Stewardship Charge, with the remainder funded by BVT.

Our contractors, C. Hughes Groundcare, use up-to-date technology to determine when services are required. They will automatically deploy to keep Lightmoor Village roads as accessible as possible and will continue to visit as needed throughout the season.

There are over 50 grit bins located in courtyards across the Village, and these are checked regularly. If your bin needs refilling, please contact the team on 01952 898524 or email [email protected].

Important information for Residents

  • During prolonged snowfall, snow on residential roads can take considerably longer to break down and melt. While grit helps, it is not an instant remedy, and its effectiveness is limited if placed on top of already fallen snow.
  • For grit to work effectively in courtyards, snow must be cleared first. Please avoid wasting grit by spreading it on fresh snow.

Did You Know?

  • The road surface temperature and whether the road is wet or dry determine the grit treatment needed—not the air temperature. Even on cold days, roads may retain enough heat that treatment is unnecessary.
  • The main purpose of gritting is to prevent ice from forming. Grit will not melt snow.
  • Spreading grit is only the first step in de-icing. Traffic movement is essential to spread the grit and complete the process.
  • Cars parked on roads can be hazardous in normal conditions. During snowy weather, parked cars can make it harder for snowploughs to operate and create additional risks for other drivers.

By following these guidelines, residents can help ensure Lightmoor Village remains safe and accessible throughout the winter months.
