Before the 1700s

Lightmoor is largely woodland and open heathland.

Late 1700s

The Lightmoor Canal is built to support the area’s growing mining and iron industries.

1800s

Coal mining, clay extraction, tramways, brick making and iron production shape the landscape during the Industrial Revolution.

1940s

Open-cast coal mining takes place during the Second World War.

Post-war years

Industry declines and much of the land returns to farmland and natural habitats.

Mid-1990s

Bournville Village Trust announces plans to create a create a new and modern village inspired by what it has learned in the past “

Late 1990s

Lightmoor is chosen as the location following discussions with the Commission for New Towns.

2005

Construction of Lightmoor Village begins.

2007 onwards

Residents begin moving into the new village.

Today

Lightmoor Village is a thriving, sustainable community where heritage, nature and modern living come together.
